OPENING OF AFEO MIDTERM 2025 CONFERENCE IN DA NANG: A STEP FORWARD TO OPEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR TECHNICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL COOPERATION IN ASEAN.

7/8/2025 – On the morning of August 6, 2025, in Da Nang City, the 24th Midterm Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO Midterm 2025) officially opened. This is a significant event for the regional engineering industry, bringing together many leading experts in the fields of engineering, technology, and the environment from across Southeast Asia.

One of the highlights of the Environmental Engineering Group meeting was the presentation by Mr. Pham Van Son, Director of the Vietnam Environmental Incident Response Center. With the topic revolving around environmental incident response in a new context, he shared his experiences and techniques for responding to oil spills, specifically in mangrove forests—a sensitive ecosystem common in ASEAN countries with humid tropical climates. He pointed out that responding to oil spills in mangrove forests is completely different from that at sea due to complex terrain, dense vegetation, and weak ecological resilience.

These practical and realistic sharings have attracted deep interest from delegates from countries in the region, where oil spills in mangrove forests are still a difficult problem. The discussion not only opens up new approaches to response techniques but also creates a premise for cooperation in sharing resources and experiences within the ASEAN bloc.

In particular, in the context of integration and technical development, the role of the Vietnam Environmental Incident Response Center – where the “yellow-shirt warriors” are always ready to respond to any emergency – has become more important than ever.

The efforts of the SOS Center – from setting up more than 100 emergency stations across the country, equipping more than 200 types of specialized equipment, to proactively communicating and educating the environment – are all contributing to reviving the spirit of “acting from the source of strength” to protect the environment in each of us.

The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Vietnam’s accession to ASEAN (July 28, 1995 – July 28, 2025). Over the past week, the leaders of the Party and State of Vietnam have organized many solemn activities to celebrate this event. Among them, the 24th Mid-term Conference of the AFEO Federation is also considered a meaningful activity in the series of welcoming events.
