NIGERIA OIL SPILL

According to a VNA correspondent in Africa, independent Nigerian oil producer Renaissance Africa Energy Co. Ltd confirmed on May 19 that an illegal connection on its Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline in Oshika community in coastal Rivers state had caused a local oil spill.

The company said it immediately isolated the pipeline and stopped production to minimize potential environmental impacts. At the same time, the company has notified state management agencies and is coordinating a joint investigation. This investigation, which will involve government and local community representatives, will determine the cause and impact of the incident.

The May 19 oil spill marked the second incident this month on the Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline and the third in Renaissance’s operations.

On May 16, the company that owns the former onshore assets of Shell Nigeria had to halt production on a pipeline to the Trans Niger pipeline, a key route for transporting crude from onshore fields to the Bonny export port, following an operational incident.

As the largest crude oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria also faces a serious oil spill problem. According to the Nigerian Oil Spill Monitor, an estimated 934 oil spills were recorded in 2024 alone, causing more than 29.4 million barrels of oil to be lost and causing serious environmental impacts as oil spilled onto land, wetlands, coastlines, and the open sea.
