Ecuadorian authorities have declared an environmental emergency after a massive oil spill in the northwest of the country, severely polluting the Esmeraldas River and affecting people’s drinking water sources.

The spill was determined to be caused by a landslide that ruptured a major oil pipeline, leaking a large amount of oil into the Esmeraldas River in the province of the same name. In response, the province’s Emergency Action Committee has ordered water restrictions and implemented emergency response measures.
Esmeraldas Mayor Vilko Villacis said the oil spill had caused “unprecedented” damage to the environment and the lives of local people. The city government has decided to stop diverting the river water to the clean water system to avoid the risk of further contamination.

The state oil company Petroecuador said it was working to fix the problem, but it is not yet possible to estimate how much oil has spilled into the river. The pipeline is an important system in Ecuador, with a capacity to transport up to 360,000 barrels of oil per day on a 500-kilometer journey from the Amazon to the Pacific Ocean.
